THEN/NOW FASHION: EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN In our contemporary world, fashion is constantly changing, and inherently fast-paced. We are relentless in innovation, unconventionality and the creation of new concepts, textiles and it-silhouettes for fashion-lovers and consumers alike to shift and conform to. However, some things are, inevitably, finite: lock combinations, hours in a day, a human life, and ideas. Good ideas, at least. They are finite. As a result, we must take from the past, and put our own modern interpretation on it. History has evolved in a manner that brings us to the point in time in which we live now: the present. Everything we create and build has somehow been influenced from our past. Womenswear fashion is both a form of expression, and, of course, a kind of art. Back in the turn of the 20th century, this was not so much the case. However, everything old is new again. So we must reminisce, and remember. Starting from 1889, fashion was seen as a practice that reflected one’s social status, wealth and lifestyle. At that time, the popularity of the bustle (a pad/frame worn under a skirt in order to add volume and fullness to the behind), an orthodox silhouette of the 1880s, began to wane. By 1891, only a thin padding remained. While bustles shrank, sleeves started to grow, and the obscene proportions peaked in the mid 1890s.
